Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book: An Updated Parent’s Review

May 8, 2010

Back in July 2009, I wrote a negative review of this book. However, I’ve recently changed my mind. My kids are a year older now, so I decided to read it to them, and they loved it.

However, one part of the book was a bit disturbing—when the ghouls want to ‘bash Bod’s head in’ while he sleeps. Despite that, the story taught my kids some interesting things, like what ‘unconsecrated ground’ is in a cemetery and who is buried there.

Exploring the Themes in The Graveyard Book: Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book presents a unique blend of spooky elements and educational tidbits. One of the central themes is the idea of growing up in an unusual environment and how it shapes the protagonist, Bod.

Parents can use this as an opportunity to discuss how different experiences shape our identities and the importance of empathy and understanding towards others who might have different backgrounds.

The book also delves into the concepts of life and death, offering a gentle introduction to these topics. The ghoulish characters and eerie setting can spark conversations about facing fears and the nature of bravery.

By reading and discussing these themes together, families can deepen their understanding of the story while enjoying a thrilling and educational experience. The Graveyard Book is not just a spooky tale; it’s a rich narrative that encourages young readers to think critically and empathetically.
