“Went” is useful, but it is often too plain.
A character does not simply go into a room. They might slip in, storm in, limp in, drift in, creep in, or stride in. Each verb changes the mood. “Went” tells the reader movement happened. A stronger verb tells the reader how it happened.
This list gives writers 100 alternatives for “went.” Use them for fiction, essays, dialogue, action scenes, character movement, travel writing, and descriptive writing.
Before replacing “went,” ask what the movement reveals. Is the character afraid, confident, injured, angry, sneaky, lost, hurried, graceful, or exhausted? The right verb should show the body, the mood, and the pressure of the scene.
